10 Most Common New Year’s Resolutions 08/01/11
We’ve all done it. We make those resolutions at the beginning of the year. We’re ready to start fresh and accomplish some of our goals. Amazingly enough, many of our resolutions are the same ones year after year. Here are some of the most common New Year’s resolutions that we love to make, over and over again.
- Lose Weight. Shedding some pounds is always top of the list when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. We’ve just over-indulged during the holidays and the bathroom scale is happy to remind us of that every time we step onto it. Unfortunately it is also the one most quickly broken.
- Get in Shape. This resolution often goes hand in hand with losing weight, but not always. You don’t have to be over weight to be out of shape. There are plenty of exercise junkies out there but the rest of us could all use more exercise to tone up muscles and keep our heart and lungs healthy.
- Stop Smoking. Smoking has been on the decline for years due to the increased knowledge of it’s health issues, the cost and the limitations placed on smokers as to where they can and cannot smoke. It remains high on the list, however, because of the difficulty people find in trying to break this addiction.
- Get organized. This is another ongoing favorite among New Year’s resolutions. We make new files. We start a new calendar. We clean out our closets. Gradually we settle back into our old habits and papers go unfiled and items pile up in the closets. Next year we can start all over again.
- Eat healthier. This is another resolution that often accompanies the ‘get in shape’ resolution. If losing weight isn’t the issue, then it is more likely to be that we are not eating the foods we should be eating. So we cut down on salt, sugar, fats and processed foods. We limit the dining out. We attempt (and sometimes achieve) this goal of healthier eating habits for the new year.
- Save Money When people look at their depleted bank accounts following the Christmas holiday, they often set a goal to put more money into savings and to spend less on non-essentials in the coming year.
- Get out of debt The start of a new year is also a time when many households take account of the amount of their money that is being consumed by interest payments on their debt. This becomes incentive for the resolution to get out of debt. As is true with many of the other resolutions, this goal is seldom accomplished without the development of a detailed plan that maps out how they will achieve their goal for the year ahead.
- Volunteer Many individuals recognize and are grateful for the various blessings they have that are not enjoyed by others. This is what often motivates the resolution to give more of their time to charity endeavors.
- Spend time with family Lives easily become busier than we intend. It is typical for family members to be those who get the leftovers of our time. When we reconsider our priorities, the importance of our family relationships often comes to the forefront.
- Quit drinking This has become a more common resolution than it once was. The reasons for the resolution can vary. For some, this resolution has to do with alcoholism and its detrimental affects on their life. For others it is a matter of finance, health or support for friends and family members dealing with alcoholism.
As you read through this list of resolutions, you will recognize what they all have in common. None of these resolutions are frivolous. They are all wise life choices to make. That is what makes them the most popular choices for New Year’s resolutions year after year.
